Elderly woman with abdominal pain

Answers

What does the abdominal radiograph show?

Large bowel dilatation / distension.

What features seen on this radiograph help interpretation ?

Incomplete haustral folds.
Peripheral position of bowel (dilated small bowel tends to be central).

What are the possible diagnoses ?

Colonic Obstruction (can be due to a number of pathologies including tumour, diverticular disease, pelvic mass etc.)

Psuedo-obstruction

What further radiological test may be useful for diagnosis ?

A water soluble contrast enema or a CT scan of the abdomen
