82 year old man with abdominal pain

Answers

What does the film show ?

There is free gas seen beneath the diaphragms – this is a pneumoperitoneum.

What are the common causes?

There are many causes including :

Diverticulitis – ruptured sigmoid diverticulum.
Perforated gastric or duodenal ulcer.
Iatrogenic, for example following endoscopy.
Extension from chest – from pneumomediastinum.

Plus many more.
