What does the chest radiograph show ?

There is round, cavitating lesion in the left mid zone.

There is a differential diagnosis for this finding - give three possible diagnoses ?

The causes of a cavitating lung lesion include :

  • Neoplasm
    Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common neoplasm to cavitate
    Metastases
  • Infection
    Including Staphylococcal pneumonia, Tuberculosis and Klebsiella
  • Vascular
    Infacrction secondary to septic emboli
  • Granulomas
    For example rheumatoid nodules

plus others

The diagnsosis in this case was found to be a carcinoma
