What does the chest radiograph show ?
There are multiple cysts seen at the left lung base.
These cysts represent dilated abnormal bronchi and the diagnosis is cystic bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a disease characterised by permanently distorted bronchi and bronchioles. It may be congenital or acquired. Acquired bronchiectasis is usually secondary to infection. The extent of the disease can range from bilateral involvement of the lungs to affecting just one subsegment of a lung. Three categories are commonly referred to : cylindrical, varicose and cystic.
What would be useful to obtain from the radiology department ?
It would be useful to view previous chest radiographs. This is a chronic condition and previous radiographs will reveal any deterioation in the appearance of the lungs.
